An Iconic Presence Driving Underground Culture
Born in 1969, Todd James emerged from the New York graffiti scene in his teens and is now a leading figure in American street art since the late 1980s. He has had a profound influence on young people worldwide, collaborating with artists such as the Beastie Boys, Iggy Pop, and Eminem.
James's reputation in the art world began to grow with his 2000 exhibition "Street Market" at the Daichi Project gallery in New York. The series of works, which recreated the back alleys of New York filled with graffiti on a grand scale, was later presented at the American Pavilion of the Venice Biennale in 2001 and toured to the PARCO Museum in Japan, creating a global sensation.
James's work features innocent lines and forms reminiscent of children's drawings, with various characters rendered in vibrant colors. While the style appears approachable at first glance, motifs such as tanks smoking cigarettes, nude women with machine guns or skulls, and anthropomorphic fighter jets playing innocently can be interpreted as a critique of society's underbelly. However, James himself explains that these motifs are simply a collection of images born from slightly dramatizing information that flows daily from television and newspapers.
This exhibition showcases new paintings depicting interiors, as well as a large-scale installation featuring a series of lightbox-style signs themed around rooms.
