Encapsulating Cartier-Bresson's Photographic Aesthetics

Born in France in 1908, Henri Cartier-Bresson was initially drawn to painting, including Surrealism. After a year-long stay in Côte d'Ivoire, Africa, he encountered the Leica camera in 1932, a device he would use throughout his life, igniting a passion for photography that would last a lifetime. He held his first solo exhibition in New York in 1933 and also participated in filmmaking.

However, the ravages of war awaited him. He was taken prisoner during World War II in 1940, but an escape attempt failed. In 1943, his third attempt succeeded, and he subsequently joined an underground organization supporting prisoners and escaped soldiers. In 1945, as part of a group of journalists, he captured the liberation of Paris on camera and also filmed the documentary "The Return." In 1947, he co-founded Magnum Photos with Robert Capa, George Rodger, and others, an organization still renowned today as the "strongest photographers' collective." He firmly established his position as a photographer.

This exhibition features 54 of his representative works. Cartier-Bresson elevated photography from a reportage technique to an art form, and his photographic aesthetics, characterized by principles described as tradition, ethics, and the classical, are encapsulated here.

Cartier-Bresson once said, "For me, the camera is a sketch pad on which I draw, a tool for intuition and spontaneity, and the master of the instant which, in visual terms, asks and answers questions." We invite you to experience the works of this extraordinary photographer, who continued to capture images that remain etched in people's memories, spanning the period before, during, and after the war.
