Photo Exhibition Also at Harajuku BOOKMARC

Photographer Masataka Ishida has traveled to 56 countries. He cites his time photographing Jamaica in 1982 as the catalyst for his professional debut.

In 1982, Ishida stayed for 53 days based in a guesthouse in Kingston, Jamaica's ghetto. He captured the local energy and atmosphere. From ghetto children to renowned artists, they speak through Ishida's lens.



The book covers ghetto life, studios, and the "Reggae Sunsplash '82" event in Montego Bay. It comprehensively documents Jamaican reggae of the era.

To coincide with the book's release, a photo exhibition will be held at Harajuku BOOKMARC. Numerous selected works from the photobook will be displayed and sold. An opening reception, including a signing session, will take place on Friday, July 6th. Events such as talk shows will also be held during the exhibition period.

This photobook and exhibition offer a glimpse into the "real" Jamaica of 1982.



Masataka Ishida
His published works include "Black Groove" (1999), "Alternative Music" (2009), and "Soul Flower Union: The Tracks of Unleashed Songs" (2014). He is currently serializing "Distant Views with Sound" on Artes Electronic. His CD jacket photography includes Eikichi Yazawa's "The Original 2" (1993), Faye Wong's "The Best of Best" (1999), Soul Flower Union's "Winds Fairground" (1999), "Relaxin' With Lovers" (2000-2018, all 15 works), Jane Birkin, Taraf de Haïdouks, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, ZUBONS, Carnation, Yuji Hamagushi, LIKKLE MAI, and many others. He has traveled to 56 countries.
