First-Ever Lacquerware Pieces to Be Unveiled
A solo exhibition titled "Outline" by Ryota Nishimoto, who creates works using various materials such as vinyl chloride pipes, resin, and concrete, in addition to woodworking, will be held at the select shop "ataW" in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture.
Ryota Nishimoto has previously exhibited works at "Public Production 67 PLAYING ON A SURFACE" (Fuchu Art Museum, 2016) and "Unit Exhibition" (21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, 2015).
This exhibition, "Outline," will feature new works using lacquerware, a first for Nishimoto. The lacquerware was created with the cooperation of lacquerware artisans from the Kawada district in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, centered around the long-established lacquerware shop, Urushikundo. Through the lacquer coating, the inherent contours of wooden blocks, ready-made glasses, and screws are brought to the fore, while also revealing the new charm of traditional lacquerware craftsmanship.
In addition to the lacquerware pieces, a variety of works, from functional daily items to purely aesthetic objects, will be on display and for sale. Ryota Nishimoto himself is scheduled to visit the shop on Sunday, May 27, during the exhibition period.
