"90 Nights," a photobook by Misawa Fujishiro capturing Tokyo's club scene in the 1990s, is being celebrated with an exhibition at BOOKMARC, the bookstore curated by MARC JACOBS in Jingumae, Tokyo. An Exhibition to Accompany the Photobook
Early 1990s Tokyo. Following the euphoria of the 80s and the end of the bubble economy, with chart-topping albums selling over a million copies, club culture began to truly take hold.
Clubs like "GOLD," "inkstick," "Third Warehouse," "Milos Garage," "P.Picasso," "Yellow," "CAVE," "blue," and "Maniac Love" opened one after another. Club music gained momentum, and the energy of the youth swirled within them.
The photobook "90 Nights" captures this Tokyo club scene of the 90s. Photographer Misawa Fujishiro vividly and meticulously documents the atmosphere and scenes of the time.
A compact camera, monochrome film. The club dwellers are captured in simple frames, illuminated by a single flash. This was just before the internet became widespread, an era when exciting things were experienced firsthand. The expressions of the faces encountered night after night appear even more alive today.
The book also includes rare portraits of prominent DJs and creators from the club music scene of that era. It serves as a valuable record, evoking nostalgia for those who knew the club scene then and offering a fresh perspective for those who didn't.
To commemorate the release of the photobook, an exhibition will be held, showcasing works not included in the book. An opening reception and signing event will also take place the day before the exhibition opens. We hope you will visit.
