The Duo Who Created the Photographer "Robert Capa"

"Robert Capa / Gerda Taro: Two Photographers"

Next year marks exactly one century since 1913, the birth year of André Friedmann, better known as the renowned photographer "Robert Capa." To commemorate this milestone, the Yokohama Museum of Art will host the exhibition "Robert Capa / Gerda Taro: Two Photographers" from Saturday, January 26, to Sunday, March 24, 2013.

"Robert Capa" Was a Fictional Photographer

André Friedmann and Gerta Pohorylle. The two photographers met in Paris in 1934 and quickly bonded. In the spring of 1936, they began taking and selling their photojournalism under the pseudonym "Robert Capa." Soon after their work began to gain traction, Friedmann himself effectively became "Capa," while Pohorylle established herself as a photographer under the name "Gerda Taro," inspired by Taro Okamoto.

This exhibition is comprised of two "solo exhibitions," one for Capa and one for Taro, showcasing their respective photographic works. While it was previously difficult to distinguish between their photographs due to their collaborative efforts, recent research and investigation have shed light on the entirety of their photographic output.

The First Comprehensive Introduction to Gerda Taro's Work in Japan

Robert Capa, who remains immensely popular more than 50 years after his death, and Gerda Taro, who has been largely overlooked in his shadow. This exhibition marks the first opportunity to comprehensively introduce Taro's work in Japan. Through approximately 300 rich photographic works and related materials, the exhibition traces the trajectory of their lives and careers, illuminating their deep connection and individual differences.

The exhibition covers Capa's entire career, beginning with his first significant work: photographs of Trotsky's speech in Copenhagen in 1932. It includes iconic war photographs such as "The Falling Soldier" from the Spanish Civil War and "D-Day" from World War II. It also features street photography from his later stay in Japan and images from the Indochina War, taken shortly before his death by a landmine.

This exhibition offers the best opportunity to look back at the life and work of "Robert Capa," a photojournalist whose work continues to captivate us across generations.
