Lavier's exhibition: a mix of genres, media, and materials

Bertrand Lavier is an artist born in France in 1949.

Lavier, who had a strong influence on the appropriation art movement of the 1980s and 1990s, is known for his works featuring multiple thick layers of paint applied to everyday mass-produced items like refrigerators and tables, as well as his readymade works that place common objects on pedestals.

Lavier himself likes to call his works, expressed away from their original context, "chantiers" (construction sites).

This implies that the objects are not considered finished, leaving open the possibility of returning to them and adding to them.

Lavier's works are characterized by his artistic method of mixing a wide variety of media and materials.

Lavier's approach, which examines the relationship between painting and sculpture, representation and abstraction, and life and art, shows a blend of Marcel Duchamp's readymade spirit, pop art's popular cultural imagery, and the Nouveau Réalisme technique of using everyday elements.

This exhibition will feature seven works from the collection of the Fondation Louis Vuitton.

Visitors can experience Lavier's unique style, which constantly evolves and challenges experiments using strategies of interpretation, substitution, and transformation, through works such as "Atomium" (2007), which uses a Van Gogh-esque painting technique to cover objects with thick layers of paint, and "La Bocca sur Zanker" (2005), a humorous interpretation of a readymade.

Other works on display include the neon installation "Empress of India II" (2005), the acrylic painting "Walt Disney Productions 1947-2013 Nº 2" (2013), "Birka" (2007), "Paysages Axiois" (2014), and a sculpture with chrome plating, "Ibo" (2008).

is displayed.

Lavier's signature style transcends traditional categories of painting and sculpture, blending materials. The resulting works challenge our ways of seeing and our accustomed interpretations of art, delivering a paradoxical yet strikingly clear visual impact.

This exhibition was planned as part of the "Hors-Les-Murs (Beyond the Walls)" project, which introduces previously unseen works from the collection, under the direction of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, an institution dedicated to contemporary art and artists and their exhibitions.
