Cherishing Moments of Tea

The Concept: "A Space to Nurture the Spirit of Tea"
Asahi Ware, originating in the Keichō era (1596-1615), boasts a history of 400 years. In 2016, the eldest son, Yusuke Matsubayashi, succeeded his father as the 16th generation master, Toyosai, and took over the kiln. Now, a new establishment opens as a hub to carry this tradition into the future.
The "moment of tea" is an integral part of daily life. Though a simple pause, its enjoyment is diverse and profound. Deeply intertwined with Japanese lifestyles and culture, it offers people rich refreshment and inspiration.
At the new shop, Asahi Ware, which has crafted vessels, primarily teaware, in Uji for generations, aims to create a space where domestic and international guests can experience new ideas and styles, fostering a tea culture that looks to the future.
The location is along the Uji River, the origin of Uji's tea culture. Uji tea thrives thanks to the morning mist rising from the Uji River. The clay for Asahi Ware is also formed from earth carried by the Uji River over millennia. The Uji River is thus a vital presence in Uji's tea culture.
The creative direction and spatial design were handled by Shigeo Mashiro, director of "Sfera," based in Kyoto and Milan. The design respects the traditional Japanese aesthetic of the building while incorporating a global perspective and contemporary sensibility.
A wide opening and deck facing the Uji River integrate the river's scenery and gentle flow into the space. The interior also features ceramic plates specially produced by Asahi Ware for this project.
The space also includes event and gallery areas for planning and hosting exhibitions. These will feature displays and events, including workshops, directed by Toshiyuki Matsubayashi, the younger brother of the 16th master, Toyosai, who also serves as brand manager.
The opening exhibition introduces "flowers" and "Japanese sweets," elements deeply connected to tea culture, from a fresh perspective. In the tea room space, new vases by the 16th master, Toyosai, will be displayed alongside floral arrangements.
In the gallery space, a collaboration with Sayoko Sugiyama of "Okashimaru," known for her innovative approach to Japanese sweets based in Kyoto, will present an installation where tea, flowers, and sweets converge to create a unique landscape.
The beauty of Japanese culture, underpinned by tradition. This new shop offers a profound experience of its splendor.
