Talk & Slideshow Events Also Held During the Exhibition Period
Herbie Yamaguchi has been traveling the world, primarily around Europe, since the 1970s. His lens, separate from the widely known cultural scenes of music and art, focused on Eastern Europe during its periods of national integration and independence.
The joy, sorrow, energy, and the end and rebirth that come from multiple ethnic groups coexisting on one continent. Yet, even within that tumultuous era, people's everyday lives undeniably persisted. Yamaguchi expresses this "ordinary daily life" through his photographs.
To celebrate the release of the photobook "and STILLNESS," an exhibition titled "and STILLNESS: Prague, Warsaw, Budapest Then—Eastern Europe 1985-1996" is being held. The exhibition features works capturing fleeting moments discovered amidst the dramatic changes in Eastern Europe.
On January 21st, during the exhibition, Herbie Yamaguchi will host a talk and slideshow. This is a precious opportunity to immerse yourself in the "serenity behind the intensity" that his work conveys.
Herbie Yamaguchi
Born in Tokyo in 1950. Joined the photography club in his second year of junior high school. After graduating from university, he moved to London in 1973 and spent ten years there. For a time, he belonged to a theater company and worked as an actor, while also experiencing the punk rock and new wave movements. He shared a flat with a pre-fame Boy George, experiencing London's most exciting era. His photographs of vibrant London from that period received high acclaim. After returning to Japan, he has continued to turn his camera towards ordinary people, collaborating with domestic artists such as Masaharu Fukuyama, and has left behind many works in monochrome, in a style of candid portraits. He has many fans who appreciate his gentle and pure style, and his themes of "wanting to photograph human hope" and "wanting to take pictures that make people fall in love" have remained unwavering since his junior high school days and are still ongoing.
