This marks the second collaboration between Sumida Aquarium and Mika Ninagawa, following last year's event. By projecting video works created by Ninagawa and decorating the space with her photographs, all 18 jellyfish tanks transform into a fantastical collaborative environment with her art.
In the "Jellyfish Kaleidoscope Tunnel," a 50-meter-long passage surrounded by approximately 5,000 mirrors on its walls and ceiling, video works by Ninagawa will be projected onto 8 jellyfish tanks and the surrounding walls. Within this tunnel, where the jellyfish drift gently in the water, the lighting, aroma, and projected visuals create an ever-changing atmosphere, offering an experience akin to floating through a mirror alongside the jellyfish. The projected visuals shift dramatically between day and night, providing a different ambiance for each.
Furthermore, in the "Jellyfish Zone," 10 jellyfish tanks, including a large tank measuring approximately 4 meters wide and 1.5 meters high, will be adorned with video and photographic works. The beauty of the large tank, which fills the field of vision with overwhelming impact, is a must-see.
Additionally, in the "Aqua Lab," where jellyfish breeding and research activities have been conducted since the aquarium's opening, visitors can observe the growth process of baby jellyfish born at the aquarium. Through the "Jellyfish Researcher" experience program, which allows visitors to learn about jellyfish while enjoying their ecology and characteristics, one can approach the mystery of jellyfish, whose form is said to have remained unchanged since ancient times, from a scientific perspective unique to an aquarium.
During this period, the 5th-floor cafe will offer a limited-edition jellyfish-themed special menu item, the "Fluffy Jellyfish Soda." Furthermore, a special version of the annual passport featuring Mika Ninagawa's artwork will be sold, and original postcards will be released in limited quantities at the shop.
Regarding this collaboration, Mika Ninagawa commented, "I am delighted to be working with the jellyfish at Sumida Aquarium again this year. In addition to the popular Jellyfish Kaleidoscope Tunnel from last time, we plan to project videos and photographs onto the large jellyfish tank this time. Please come and visit."
