“KAMUY - A NEW EXPERIMENTAL FILM EXPERIENCE”
For two days only, October 29-30, 2016, the art film "KAMUY" directed by Yukihiro Shoda will be released. This experiential art film, exploring the themes of "life and death, sex and life," was completed using novel CG techniques.
Text by Kosaku Waseda (OPENERS)
Theme: "Life and Death, Sex and Life"
Director Yukihiro Shoda has consistently challenged new forms of visual expression, known for his work on music videos for artists like Sakanaction and RADWIMPS, commercials, and critically acclaimed pieces such as "blind," "Social 0.0 LAB," and "TOWER RECORDS LIVE LIVEFUL!"
The film "KAMUY" delves into the memories experienced by a fetus, born from a goddess symbolizing nature and motherhood, within a male soldier representing aggression, all centered around the theme of "life and death, sex and life."
The role of the male soldier is played by Nijiro Murakami, an actor who debuted in the film "Two Windows" and has since garnered attention for his roles in notable works like "Distraction Babies" and "Aozora no Shita, Kimi no Koe."
The music is by Young Juvenile Youth, who brought the director's themes of "life and death, sex and life" to life. Additionally, a team of exceptional talents, including special effects makeup artist JIRO, stylist Kyoko Fushimi, and the AnimationCafe team responsible for the innovative CG, have come together for this project.
The event will feature an exhibition of works by contemporary artist Akiteru Mishima, inspired by the film's world, and will offer a fully immersive viewing experience, including watching the visuals projected onto a ceiling-mounted screen while lying down.
This work also serves as a critique of a visual culture that merely consumes. Through collaborations with various artists, the costumes, makeup, CG, and even the screening environment have been conceived as a unified artwork from its inception. This marks an unprecedented experiential visual production, receiving high praise from notable figures such as Yojiro Noda of RADWIMPS and Naohiro Ukawa of DOMMUNE.
Regarding the release, director Yukihiro Shoda commented, "This project began as a casual conversation last fall with the two members of Young Juvenile Youth about wanting to create something fun together. While it's an experimental endeavor that proposes how the work should be presented, I'm delighted if audiences can come and experience this first-class play, meticulously crafted by first-class artists."
The screening is limited to two days, with plans for future screenings in other regions.
