Beautiful Ghosts Appearing in Tokyo This Summer

Fuyuko Matsui draws upon the techniques of classical Japanese painting while expressing her unique worldview. Her distinctive style, which probes the fundamental aspects of human existence such as life, death, and sexuality, has garnered attention not only in Japan but also internationally.

She completed her doctoral program in Japanese Painting at Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School in 2007, earning a Ph.D. in Fine Arts. Beyond the art world, she is also recognized as an artist with a broad range of activities, including receiving the VOGUE JAPAN WOMEN OF THE YEAR award in 2006.

In her new exhibition 'Chogan,' she will present ghost paintings for the first time in approximately 10 years. After a decade, it will be compelling to witness the beauty and transparency of the ghosts that emerge in Tokyo this summer, brought forth by her hand.
