The individuality of professionals emerges in how they use their pencils
"THE SECRET LIFE OF THE PENCIL" is a project by product and packaging designer Alex Hammond and photographer Mike Tinney, focusing on pencils in this exhibition.
This exhibition captures the beautiful allure of pencils actually used by professionals in photographs, expressing the charm of this writing instrument as a counterpoint to our digital society.
By photographing the used pencils on the desks of world-class artists, architects, writers, and designers with overwhelming detail, the exhibition reveals their individuality, showcasing how they established themselves and their work using these simple writing tools, in ways rarely seen.

This exhibition was first held in May 2015 at Paul Smith No.9 Albemarle Street Shop in London's Mayfair district, displaying photographs of pencils used by Paul Smith's product designer Tom Dixon, sculptor Anish Kapoor, and photographer David Bailey.
For the exhibition at Paul Smith SPACE GALLERY, Kenya Hara, Makoto Tanijiri, Keiichi Tanaami, Kengo Kuma, Masayoshi Sukita, Ryuichi Sakamoto, NIGO®, and the architectural unit Klein Dytham architecture have newly joined, with photographs of their used pencils to be added.
Photographs of pencils used by notable figures will also be available for purchase at the venue.
