100 selected works by 35 designers, from masters to emerging talents
The "Future Beauty: The Future of Japanese Fashion" exhibition brings together works by Japanese fashion masters renowned worldwide, such as Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, and Yohji Yamamoto, alongside pieces by emerging designers who carry on the legacy of Japanese fashion. This exhibition, which garnered significant acclaim in London in 2010 and Munich in 2011, returns to Tokyo this year, expanded with new works.
Japanese fashion, which took flight globally alongside Japan's economic growth in the latter half of the 20th century, blossomed with a unique identity. Kenzo Takada and Issey Miyake, active in Europe and America in the 1970s, paved the way, followed by Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto's Paris debut in 1981, laying the foundation. Initially described as "avant-garde" for breaking free from Western aesthetics, their work sparked diverse opinions but eventually led the fashion world. Today, Japanese designs continue to inspire and influence global fashion, reflecting uniquely developed pop culture.
The exhibition is organized into four sections: "Praise of Shadows," "Flatness," "Tradition and Innovation," and "Stories Hidden in Everyday Life." It features approximately 100 carefully selected works from about 35 designers and brands, ranging from Japanese fashion masters to contemporary talents like Sacai, Undercover, and Matohu, as well as emerging designers whose brands were established less than ten years ago. Additionally, documentary films, textiles, and collection footage will be presented, offering a multifaceted perspective on the future of Japanese fashion. The exhibition design is by emerging architect Sou Fujimoto.
Japanese fashion, constantly attracting global attention as a "cool space" that continues to create free and creative styles and propose new meanings of dressing, is the subject of this exhibition. It serves as a valuable platform to summarize these achievements and explore their future.
