Fondation Louis Vuitton Unveils "Observatory of Light"
From May 11 (Wed), the Fondation Louis Vuitton in France is exhibiting "Observatory of Light," a temporary art installation by Daniel Buren. Inside and outside the 12 "sails"—composed of 3,600 glass panels designed by Frank Gehry—visitors can experience the architecture anew through a series of movements involving color, shadow, reflection, transparency, and contrast.

The Chromatic Forms of Twelve "Sails"
At the Fondation Louis Vuitton in France, "Observatory of Light," a temporary art installation by Daniel Buren, is currently on display. This project contributes to the creation of contemporary art and offers a novel encounter between the architecture and art. The glass "sails" that symbolize the exterior of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, designed by Frank Gehry, are composed of 3,600 glass panels arranged in 12 units. These are covered with colored filters, interspersed with white and transparent striped panels, and installed vertically to the ground. The chosen 13 colors appear and disappear, forming ever-changing chromatic forms that shift with the time of day and the seasons. Viewed from both the inside and outside of the glass "sails," a new luminous space unfolds through a dynamic interplay of color, shadow, reflection, transparency, and contrast.
Internationally acclaimed artist Daniel Buren has, since the 1960s, developed a radical artistic practice using his signature "visual tool"—vertical stripes 8.7 cm wide, in color or white. After focusing on painting from 1965 to 1967, he shifted to creating works that engage with space and its context. Today, all of his works are conceived and created on-site, taking into account the unique space, context, and characteristics of the location where they are exhibited, whether it be a museum, art gallery, or public space.

Daniel Buren
Bernard Arnault, President of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, commented: "Daniel Buren has engaged in a profound dialogue with Frank Gehry and his architectural creation, designing a precise and magnificent project filled with charm. His work resonates beautifully with the architecture of the Fondation, continuing his unique approach of combining color, transparency, and light that began in the 1970s."
A catalog designed by the artist himself will also be published to accompany the exhibition. It features works created from the 1970s to the present day, organized around intersecting themes of color, transparency, light, translucency, and projection.
In conjunction with the exhibition, a three-day event titled "BurenCirque: '3 times a Hut'" will be held from June 2, 2016, with a campsite set up opposite the Fondation, alongside workshops for children.
