Art Project: "Grand Seiko Avant-garde"
"Grand Seiko Avant-garde" is an art project initiated by Grand Seiko, inviting both Daido Moriyama and Nobuyoshi Araki. The works were first unveiled at "BASELWORLD 2016" held in Switzerland in March 2016.
This art project is based on the "Black Ceramics Limited Collection" from Grand Seiko, SEIKO's flagship brand launched in 1960. This is the first Grand Seiko model to feature ceramic on the entire front of the case.
The "Grand Seiko Avant-garde" was showcased at Baselworld 2016 and received high acclaim not only from the watch industry but also from art photography and art circles.
Straps Adorned with Works by Daido Moriyama and Nobuyoshi Araki Exhibited
For this "Black Ceramics Limited Collection," photographs provided by Moriyama and Araki were adopted for the strap designs. The surface of each strap is crafted by connecting strips of a single artwork.
Moriyama provided two pieces: fishnet stockings on a woman and a dog looking back ("Dog of Misawa"). These works are striking for their monochrome, cool aesthetic, graphical patterns, and narrative quality.
Araki contributed two pieces from his photobook "Hana Kyoku" (Flower Songs). His work explores themes of eros and thanatos, with the vibrant colors conveying the alluring vitality of flowers.
The art pieces created for this project will be exhibited at the artists' solo shows.
