Tracing the Evolution of Botanical Art Along the History of English Gardens

From Saturday, January 16, 2016, an exhibition featuring botanical art, "English Garden: Flowers of Britain from the Collection of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew," will begin.

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, which began as a private royal garden in the mid-18th century, has amassed a collection of approximately 220,000 botanical artworks. The magnificent gardens are cherished by Londoners as a place of relaxation and were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site (Cultural Heritage) in 2003.

The exhibition presents about 150 selected masterpieces of botanical art, paintings, designs, and crafts from the collection of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, tracing the evolution of botanical art along the history of English gardens, from the early 17th century to the present day.

The exhibition will also feature highly sought-after items such as Charles Darwin's pencil sketches of orchids, known for his work on "On the Origin of Species," and the 17th-century German botanical encyclopedia "Hortus Eystettensis." Additionally, a space will be created within the venue where visitors can enjoy the exhibits while enveloped in the scent of an English garden.

Attention should also be paid to the venue's design, created by Klein Dytham Architecture, the design firm founded by Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein, alumni of the Royal College of Art (London), who were also responsible for projects like Daikanyama T-Site (Tsutaya Books) and Shonan T-Site.
