Encounters Between Past and Present, Their Destructive Beauty
From Wednesday, December 2nd, to Sunday, January 17th, 2016, the LOEWE boutique in Miami's Design District is hosting its first art exhibition, 'CHANCE ENCOUNTERS.' The exhibition, curated by LOEWE Foundation's Creative Director Jonathan Anderson, has generated significant buzz across various circles.
Conceived as 'a collection of images that represent the abstract portrait of the present moment,' this exhibition focuses on four British artists across generations: Anthea Hamilton, Paul Nash, Lucie Rie, and Rose Wylie. The sight of approximately 40 of their representative works gathered in one place is spectacular.
'The initial idea when conceptualizing the LOEWE boutique was to create an environment that brings Spanish history and craftsmanship into the modern era. The ultimate goal of this project is to foster a 'conversation' across various fields, including Arts and Crafts. This exhibition is a series of personal snapshots of moments that have stayed with me and shaped my thinking. For me, art is a lens through which I view and examine the 'here and now,'' says Anderson.
The LOEWE Miami Design District boutique opened in March 2015. At the center of the shop is an actual 'horreo' (a wooden grain storage structure) built in the 18th century near the border of Spain's Galicia region and Portugal. This exhibition is centered around this 'horreo,' embodying LOEWE's respect for tradition and modernity, and presenting an encounter between past and present while embracing the 'potential for contradiction' that is key to Anderson's creative approach.
Also central to the exhibition are the ceramic works by Austrian-born British artist Lucie Rie (1902–1995). Rie elevated ceramic techniques to new heights of aesthetic beauty, creating forms characterized by delicate lines and refined functionality. Alongside Rie's decorative vases and bowls, tableware that combines practicality and elegance, co-created with her student Hans Coper, is also on display.
It is impossible to ignore the inextricable link between Rie's clear, stylized forms and the photographic works of British painter and war artist Paul Nash (1889–1946). Nash's monochrome photographs possess a surreal beauty and timeless appeal in seemingly mundane landscapes——waves lapping on the shore, freshly plowed fields——filled with timeless charm.
In contrast to the restrained forms of Rie and Nash, the works of Rose Wylie (born 1934) and Anthea Hamilton (born 1978) are characterized by a certain extravagance and a delight in theatricality, seeming to drift through the endless flow of images that shape our understanding of the contemporary world.
Enjoy the destructive beauty of chance encounters, and the vision presented by Jonathan Anderson and LOEWE, unbound by time, place, or theme.
