Grand and Intricate Contemporary Art Woven with Foil Craftsmanship

'Tsuki no Kioku' Exhibition Held at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store

At the Art Salon on the 6th Floor of the Main Building at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store, 'Tsuki no Kioku' (Memories of the Moon) by Hiroto Rakusho is being held from December 2nd (Wednesday). The exhibition features contemporary art with the 'moon' as its motif, created by Hiroto Rakusho, who inherits the traditional 'Kingin Moyo Haku' (gold and silver patterned foil) technique passed down in Nishijin, Kyoto. This exhibition was planned due to the strong affinity between the theme of the 'moon,' which is considered an important identity for Japanese people, and Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store.

The 'Moon' That Resonates Quietly in the Japanese Heart

Hiroto Rakusho, born in Kyoto's Nishijin district, inherits the traditional 'Kingin Moyo Haku' technique passed down in the area. His traditional skills, represented by high-definition reproduction, have greatly contributed to the preservation of first-class cultural assets in Japan, and his techniques are also utilized in works such as the 'Wind God and Thunder God Screens' that can be viewed at Kennin-ji Temple in Kyoto.

Meanwhile, his hands also create contemporary art where this technique breathes. The motif for this contemporary art, imbued with the technology that protects national treasures, is the 'moon.' The traditional technique brings a solemn yet delicate presence to the artworks.

Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store | 'Hiroto Rakusho: Tsuki no Kioku' Exhibition

Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store considers the 'moon' as one of the important identities of the Japanese people and wished to introduce the worldview of Rakusho's works through this exhibition. The alignment of their intentions has made possible an exhibition that brings together the diverse worldviews woven by orthodox foil craftsmanship.

This valuable exhibition, where you can experience dynamic works imbued with the tradition of Nishijin and the techniques of foil craftsmanship, runs until December 8th (Tuesday). We highly recommend taking this opportunity to view the works that shine like the moon in the clear autumn night sky.
