Tsuyoshi Tane: "An Exposition of Ideas"
Frank Gehry, a leading architect from the United States, has spent over 50 years creating works that overturn architectural conventions and challenge societal norms, including the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the Fondation Louis Vuitton.
The "Architect Frank Gehry Exhibition 'I Have an Idea'" introduces Gehry's thought and creative processes with Tsuyoshi Tane, a rising architect noted for designing the Estonian National Museum and being a finalist in the international competition for Tokyo's New National Stadium, as the exhibition director. Focusing on his "power of ideas," which has greatly influenced Tane's own work, the exhibition is structured around three perspectives: "Architecture, People, and Technology," exploring the origins of his free-thinking approach.
The venue showcases the background of idea generation and the process leading to completion, based on numerous models. Furthermore, it features a projection that allows visitors to experience the vibrant exteriors and comfortable interiors of Gehry's architecture through video, as well as a "Gehry Room" offering a glimpse into Gehry as an individual.
Main Exhibition Contents
In "Masterpieces of Gehry Architecture," the exteriors and interiors of Gehry's representative works are projected large on multiple walls through newly filmed videos, allowing visitors to experience the spaces immersively.
The "Gehry Room" offers insight into Gehry's personality through footage of his own residence, a partial recreation of his office, models that represent the raw origins of his ideas, and photographs that provide a glimpse into his daily life as an architect. Visitors can also sit on Gehry-designed chairs, the "Wiggle Side Chair" and "Wiggle Stool."
"The Evolution of Ideas" presents projects with numerous models, sketches, and completed photographs, illustrating the process of ideas taking shape through trial, error, and refinement.
"The Realization of Ideas" showcases the cutting-edge design technology that made Gehry's architecture possible, including the BIM software "Digital Project" by Gehry Technologies, mock-ups of Japanese-made colored titanium and stainless steel used in his buildings, and projections of construction site photos, tracing the process from idea to realization.
Frank Gehry's "ideas" and his commitment to realizing them offer not only architects and those involved in construction but also many people engaged in design and manufacturing the joy of free thinking and the courage to keep challenging themselves, bringing surprise, discovery, joy, and inspiration to visitors.
