Transforming Japan's Esteemed Functionality into Cultural Value
The Agency for Cultural Affairs Media Arts Festival began in 1997 and celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. The "Art Division," featuring works by media artists from around the world, is typically a fiercely competitive category.
This exhibition, presented under the two themes of "Flow" and "Bright," offers a glimpse into the unique ways Japanese artists utilize technology and the novel expressions they create with their sensibilities.
The "Flow" exhibition, opening on Wednesday, January 25th, features two female media artists, Sachiko Kodama and Keiko Kimoto, who explore dynamism in artistic expression through ferrofluids and nonlinear structures. Their works, created using new materials and unique programming, showcase organic and biological dynamics.
The "Bright" exhibition, opening on Friday, February 10th, explores the interplay of opposing elements: light and shadow—These elements serve as the catalyst for the artworks, where shadow or light conjures various images, provoking interaction with the viewer. The exhibition will feature works by Motoyuki "moty" Chikamori + Kyoko Hisuna (plaplax), Ryota Kuwakubo, and toilka.
