An Exhibition for Disaster Recovery Support

What is the “KAKERA” Exhibition by Children from Ishinomaki City, Miyagi?

Children from elementary schools in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi, created artworks from various “kakera” (fragments) found among the rubble of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The piles of debris are not just trash; they are fragments of lives once cherished.──These works, imbued with such sentiment, touch the hearts of those who see them.

A Pure Message to "Never Forget the Earthquake"

The “KAKERA” Exhibition, currently being held at Marunouchi House since December 5th, is generating buzz. Children from Watanoha Elementary School in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, have created artworks using fragments collected from rubble. This initiative aims to convey a message of earthquake support through the children's creations.

The project and production were handled by Koji Ono, director at Diamond Heads, known for designing prominent magazines and websites. "After the earthquake, until around May, I was solely focused on 'what can I do, even if it's small,' and didn't question my actions. But when I visited the affected areas around July, I was bewildered by the sheer chaos. Things I thought would be appreciated were actually a nuisance, and there were issues with the whereabouts of donations and surpluses of relief supplies..."

It was then that he encountered a collection of objects made from rubble, characterized by their naive yet humorous, bright, and warm feel. "Seeing these kinds of works, I thought it might serve as a trigger to simply not forget this earthquake. Not as charity, but purely as a message."

No donation boxes are set up at the venue, nor are there any activities like selling merchandise to channel profits into support. Sponsors were also not solicited. This is purely an exhibition to allow visitors to feel the message and energy emanating from the artworks. The exhibition has a short run, only until the 13th of this month. Don't miss it.
