Featuring New Paintings

Andrew Kerr was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1977. He continues to be based in his hometown, creating paintings, found object art, and three-dimensional works made from paper. His works, often small in scale and intimate, are inspired by his daily life and possess a unique style and color palette that are neither figurative nor abstract.

In his paintings, Kerr uses acrylics with subdued saturation. He works on multiple unfinished paintings simultaneously, laid out on his studio floor. He has established his unique style by expanding on forms and colors that arise from unexpected moments, as well as the inherent properties of materials.

This exhibition, the first presentation of Kerr's work in Japan, showcases new paintings. Additionally, he creates frames for his two-dimensional works using discarded everyday materials such as cardboard, wood, styrofoam, and leaves. By exhibiting his flat works in a three-dimensional manner, viewers can experience a perceptual shift that liberates them from conventional visual and cognitive constraints.

With overlapping colors and brushstrokes that disrupt stable compositions, a restrained, poetic scene emerges. It is an opportunity to experience the world of Andrew Kerr, making his debut in Japan.
