A Major Exhibition, the First in Western Japan, Featuring Recent and Representative Works
Wolfgang Tillmans: Your Body is Yours
The National Museum of Art, Osaka, in Nakanoshima, will host the first major exhibition of works by Wolfgang Tillmans, the internationally acclaimed German photographer, in Western Japan. Titled "Wolfgang Tillmans: Your Body is Yours," the exhibition runs from Saturday, July 25, to Wednesday, September 23.
Text by YANAKA Tomomi
A Leading Contemporary Artist, Winner of the UK's Turner Prize
Born in Germany in 1968, Wolfgang Tillmans gained international recognition in the early 1990s for his photographs capturing everyday scenes around him. He is now based in Berlin and London, working on a global scale. His status as a frontrunner in contemporary photographic expression is underscored by his winning the Turner Prize, arguably the most prestigious award in contemporary art.
His work became widely known through publications in magazines such as "i-D" and "Interview." He is celebrated for images that blend the personal and the social, including portraits of young people on the street and his close friends, as well as explorations of contemporary themes like sexuality and gender.
This exhibition, the first major one in Western Japan and the first at a Japanese museum since 2004, features nearly 200 works. The installation, designed by Tillmans himself, creates a highly immersive exhibition space showcasing new pieces and photographs making their Japanese debut.
Among the displayed works are pieces from his recent series where he folds and twists printed media to create new forms, as well as the video installation "Book for Architects," which garnered significant attention when presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale last year.
Additionally, gallery talks by Yuka Uematsu, Senior Researcher at The National Museum of Art, Osaka, will be held on Sundays, August 2 and September 13.
Wolfgang Tillmans has consistently used photography to illuminate the society we live in, while remaining keenly aware of its contemporary context. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to engage with the work of an artist who has profoundly influenced the global art scene but has been less accessible in Japan.
