Sol LeWitt (1928-2007), a pioneer of conceptual art that gained global traction from the 1960s to the 1970s, is the subject of a solo exhibition, 'Lines and color.' The exhibition opens on Wednesday, July 15, at the CoSTUME NATIONAL Aoyama flagship store and runs until Monday, October 12.

Neither Painting Nor Sculpture, Yet Both
Born in the United States in 1928, LeWitt studied at university in New York before working at an architectural firm. He then joined MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art) in 1960, forging a career in commercial art. He began his own artistic creation in 1962, and MoMA holds not only his artworks but also pieces from his design period.
LeWitt's early works, reflecting his unique background, occupied a space between flat surfaces and objects, gradually evolving into three-dimensional, space-defining forms. He spent half a century, until his death in 2007, creating works that emphasized ideas, arranging geometric shapes and linear patterns in various configurations, thereby leading the conceptual art movement.
This exhibition, held at the CoSTUME NATIONAL flagship store, showcases works composed of color and lines, utilizing the grid that LeWitt pursued throughout his life. It offers an opportunity to engage with the ideas he sought to express through unstable lines and colors.
LeWitt's works, which he described as 'only to be called structures, not paintings or sculptures, but structures that might be either,' leave us pondering: what do these geometrically composed spaces truly convey?
