Exhibiting Works That Reveal the Essence Inherent in Everyday Materials

This is the first solo exhibition in Japan for Handiwirman Saputra, an artist highly popular in Indonesia, where contemporary art has been increasingly flourishing in recent years. The exhibition features 14 pieces, including two new works created specifically for this show.

Handiwirman Saputra was born in West Sumatra, Indonesia, in 1975. While studying sculpture at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta, in 1997, he co-founded 'Jendela Art Group' with five fellow students. Jendela, meaning 'window' in Indonesian, served as an alternative space for creating experimental works, engaging in discussions, and living together.

Handiwirman himself is adept at working across various media, not only in three-dimensional forms like sculptures and objects but also in painting and photography. His particular interest lies in matter and materials. By closely observing common materials such as neon lights, iron pipes, and rubber, he creates works that, through his unique perspective, manifest the essence inherent within them.

This exhibition, offering the first opportunity to see Handiwirman Saputra's work in Japan, is broadly divided into five sections to showcase the development of his artistic expression over 20 years, providing a comprehensive overview of his career. New works created for this exhibition are also on display, welcoming visitors.
