A Social Contribution Project Fusing Art and Design
The Great East Japan Earthquake caused immense damage, particularly in the Tohoku and Kanto regions. A project utilizing the power of art and design by Herman Miller and more trees has begun to support the disaster victims.
The Aeron Chair was born in 1995. With its ergonomic design that minimizes physical strain, offering a custom-like seating experience, and its innovative design, it has garnered support from many. It is synonymous with work chairs, hailed as "the world's most comfortable working chair," and is part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
This time, five individuals—flower artist Makoto Azuma, contemporary artists Yasuhiro Suzuki and Kohei Nawa, and architects Yuko Nagayama and Yosuke Hayano—have customized the Aeron Chair. They are creating one-of-a-kind works that fuse practicality, design, and art. Each chair will be sold for ¥525,000, with all proceeds going towards the reconstruction efforts for the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The works will be unveiled at "Art Fair Tokyo 2011," Japan's largest art fair, held at the Tokyo International Forum from Friday, April 1st to Sunday, April 3rd. Applications for purchase will be accepted at the Herman Miller Store from Friday, April 1st to Thursday, April 21st, with buyers selected by lottery on the final day. A talk event is also scheduled to be held at the Herman Miller Store on the lottery day, April 21st.
These customized Aeron Chairs will also serve as support for disaster victims. We eagerly anticipate seeing what kind of works will be presented.
