THEATER | Mirai Moriyama stars in the stage play 'Pluto', featuring a powerful cast.
THEATER|Directed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, a genius choreographer leading contemporary stage arts.
The stage play "Pluto" presented with a powerful cast, a world premiere.
Based on Osamu Tezuka's "The Greatest Robot on Earth" from Astro Boy, the manga "PLUTO" was reborn with new life under the supervision of Takashi Tezuka, remade by Naoki Urasawa, a passionate Tezuka fan, and his story collaborator Naoki Nagasaki. This popular manga, translated into over 20 languages and loved by readers worldwide, is now being staged as the play "Pluto" at Bunkamura Theater Cocoon in Tokyo and at Morinomiya Piloti Hall in Osaka in February.

“Beautiful from Every Angle”
“Every scene, every movement unfolds like a grand painting, so I believe it's beautiful from any perspective. It's a total art form that utilizes body, words, music, visuals, and stage design,” says Mirai Moriyama.
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, who directs and choreographs the stage play "Pluto," created "TeZukA" in 2011, a work that explores Osamu Tezuka's philosophy and life through the medium of dance. Starring Mirai Moriyama, it premiered at Sadler's Wells in London. Subsequently performed in over 10 countries including Paris, Hong Kong, Rome, and Tel Aviv, it received critical acclaim for its profound understanding of Tezuka's work and its innovative direction and choreography.
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, once again tackling an Osamu Tezuka work, shared his passion at a press conference held at Bunkamura Theater Cocoon: “I am a huge fan of both Osamu Tezuka’s original work and Naoki Urasawa’s manga version of "PLUTO." "PLUTO" has a grand scale and deep themes akin to Shakespearean drama, featuring a multitude of characters.”
Hiromi Nagasaku, who plays Uran, Atom's sister, portrayed by Mirai Moriyama, commented, “When I was first approached, I wondered how they would bring that work to life. They told me I might be dancing, singing, or that there were various possibilities, but I felt infinite potential and energy from Larbi, so I answered ‘I’ll do it’ without much fear. Afterwards, seeing Larbi’s work, I was deeply moved by the way he imposes no limits on expression and strives to do everything possible, finding beauty in that pure spirit.”
What is the Appeal of Larbi's Direction?
Akira Emoto, who plays Dr. Tenma, a leading figure in robotics, spoke about Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui: “Larbi has very beautiful eyes. They seem filled with a deep sadness. When directing or giving notes, I always wondered where in the world his gaze was fixed, which I found incredibly intriguing.”
Yasufumi Terawaki, playing the highly capable detective robot Gesicht, said, “I've loved ‘Astro Boy’ since I was a child. When I was asked to play Gesicht in the adaptation by Urasawa and his collaborators, whom I greatly admire as a manga artist, I of course immediately said ‘Yes.’ Larbi’s direction is thoroughly grounded, with every aspect logically explainable, yet he also trusts his intuition and has the courage to overturn his own decisions. So, with each performance, it becomes the best. His pursuit of the best at all times is truly remarkable.”
We want to witness this grand-scale production, featuring Mirai Moriyama, who returns to the stage with this as his first new work after completing his year-long tenure as an Agency for Cultural Affairs Commissioner, and a cast of talented veteran actors.
