A photo exhibition at Parco is a great opportunity to learn about more trees' activities – Ryuichi Sakamoto
more trees originally began with the slogan "NO NUKES, MORE TREES" that came to mind during the issue of the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant in Aomori Prefecture, when "stop-rokkasho" was active.
From that "NO NUKES, MORE TREES," when I spoke about just "more trees" in various places, many people felt sympathy, and even those who were resistant to issues like nuclear power showed understanding, so I thought it was a very powerful phrase.
From there, it developed into the forest-making project called more trees.
Since its launch at the end of 2007, our activities have expanded to Kochi, Asahikawa, and the Philippines, thanks to the charity of those who support us. Now, we have also signed an agreement to support forests in Nagano Prefecture.
Many of more trees' supporters are photographers, and the idea of "if there are this many photographers, we can do something" led to this project, which we've been planning since last year and realized as part of Parco's 40th-anniversary event.
Many of my friends are photographers, and many are active in fashion, design, and commercial fields. You can see "forests" captured by photographers who don't usually engage with nature.
I wonder what kind of "forest" images capture their interest.
The afforestation at the core of more trees' activities takes a very long time.
It takes at least 50 years for a tree to mature, and for larch trees, 70 to 80 years.
If we plant now, it will be close to 2100, but it's better than not doing anything (laughs).
I believe this photo exhibition is a great opportunity to learn about more trees' activities while viewing photographs of forests by photographers I admire.
I really want people who don't know about "forests" to become aware.
