The Sharpest Car

SuzukiWhat motivated you to get your license this time?

KatsuuraWhen I was in France recently, a friend drove me around. I didn't realize she was a novice driver until we were in the car. She couldn't turn left or right, her braking was jerky, and she told me not to talk to her while driving. I had a scary two hours. That's when I thought, 'I'd be better off driving myself.' Also, people who drive Porsches are all excellent drivers. Watching from the passenger seat, they drive like racers, which is so cool. I want to be like that too...

SuzukiWhen you have a good tool, your skills will naturally rise to match it. If you get a very sharp knife, you might cut your finger at first, but you'll learn to use it by thinking about how to handle it. And that's cool. It's the same with wearing sharp clothes, isn't it? If you only wear soft, feminine clothes, your body and mind will become lax.

KatsuuraThat's true. I need to put in the effort. What do you think of Porsches?

SuzukiIt's one of the sharpest cars money can buy.

If You Can Own a Porsche, It's Your Duty to Drive It Without Hesitation

KatsuuraWhen I ask men about Porsches, they all seem happy when women drive them. Why is that?

SuzukiIt's probably because it looks so cool. I think it's wonderful too, but sports cars really suit women. While a woman driving a minivan with lots of children might be seen as maternal and good in its own way, what men often seek in a young woman is someone sexy yet strong and active, like Marianne Faithfull, Jane Birkin, or Jane Fonda. Women who aren't bound by convention are attractive.

KatsuuraWomen in my generation are caught between those two worlds. There's a part of us that asserts independence, and then there's the longing to have a minivan full of children.

SuzukiI imagine so. But a Porsche, in particular, has a fighting spirit, doesn't it? It's a car that declares you are an independent person, unwilling to compromise with societal prejudices or the various things that hold you back.

KatsuuraThat's true.

SuzukiYou probably have friends who are more minivan-oriented among your peers, but in life, there's no victory or defeat. There are many different ways to live, and perhaps the challenge is simply to live. If, by luck or as a result of your efforts, you can afford a Porsche and make it your own, then it's your duty to drive it without hesitation. A 32-year-old single woman driving a Porsche, and a 32-year-old woman with a happy family driving a wagon – both demonstrate ways of living that are not superior or inferior to each other. And the fact that you're not driving a wagon now means you're on the side of the Porsche, doesn't it?

KatsuuraThat's absolutely true. But it also means you can't have everything.

SuzukiAnd at the same time, it means you've chosen a path, even though other possibilities might have always existed in your life.
