Ryuichi Sakamoto | Ryuichi Sakamoto × Haruomi Hosono Discuss Haruomi Hosono Tribute Album (4)

Ryuichi Sakamoto × Haruomi Hosono: A Deep Dive into the 'Haruomi Hosono Tribute Album' (Part 4)

This is the final installment of our web-exclusive conversation between Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto, recorded for the NHK-FM program "Music Museum: Sound Museum Ryuichi Sakamoto" broadcast on April 29th. The four-part talk focuses on the "Haruomi Hosono Tribute Album," released on April 25th. We hope you enjoy it.

Track 4: "Sanji no Komoriuta"

The sound of today, filled with everyone's feelings

SakamotoThere are still many songs on this 'Haruomi Hosono Tribute Album,' but which are your favorites, Hosono-san?

HosonoI like them all, not a single one I dislike. Setting the songs aside, the arrangements are excellent.

SakamotoNo, no, it's because the songs themselves are good.

HosonoOne impression I have is that everything is very soft. Perhaps I could say it's feminine? But I have a bit of a macho side too (laughs). The feeling that everyone has embraced these songs makes me think it's the sound of the current era, all of it. I really felt the present moment in them.

SakamotoI feel the same. And on top of that, isn't it the love for you, Hosono-san?

HosonoI felt that too (laughs). Not so much for me, but for my music. They aren't the type to challenge my character, unlike, for example, YMO. While YMO is often covered, those covers are more challenging compared to these.

SakamotoThey treat the songs with care, compared to YMO (laughs).

HosonoIsn't that the difference between hit songs and the more casual ones? (laughs)

SakamotoYMO can probably be treated a bit more roughly. Little Creatures' "High School Lullaby" is also an interesting approach.

HosonoIt is interesting.

SakamotoThe drum fill in the intro is a complete copy, isn't it?

HosonoI was surprised by Kuchiroro. Written as □□□, Kuchiroro, that's unusual.

SakamotoThey are also a group released under 'commmons'.

HosonoThey're often talked about at clubs. "Peking Duck" is amazing.

SakamotoThe chorus is incredible. Such an amazing approach.

HosonoUnexpected, truly unexpected. I was astonished.

SakamotoI was astonished too. For our generation, it's like, 'Oh, so that's how they'd do it,' (laughs).

HosonoThat was quite a stimulus.

SakamotoHiroshi Takano + Ikuko Harada's "Owari no Kisetsu" also...

HosonoThis was good too. Captures the current mood.

SakamotoThe timbre, the texture. World Standard + Mitsuko Koike's "Sanji no Komoriuta" is also lovely.

HosonoIt's wonderful. Shall we listen? I love Koike-san's voice. It's the best.

Track 4: "Sanji no Komoriuta"

SakamotoWow, what a great track. The vocals are beautiful, and the violin is lovely too.

HosonoAs I've said many times, the song is just raw material.

SakamotoI wonder how many people in total are involved in this tribute album. Even this relatively simple track involves seven people. A great many people across generations are involved.

HosonoWhat am I supposed to do? Just listen and enjoy it?

SakamotoThat's not it, is it? (laughs)

HosonoBecause I'm not involved in it.

SakamotoNot in this particular one, right. But if you receive this, doesn't that mean there's something for you to do next?

HosonoThat's true, there is. Let's talk about that another time (laughs).

SakamotoPerhaps everyone is expecting that, and everyone is pushing you forward, aren't they?

HosonoI did feel that. Yes.

SakamotoEven if it's not that, it's close to the acoustic sound of "Tokyo Shyness" that we've been working on for over a year.

HosonoIt is close. I wonder why.

SakamotoI wonder why.

HosonoI think the sound of today, everyone's feelings are packed into this. It's about feelings, I think.

SakamotoAs for me, I'm truly happy that such a wonderful album could be released from 'commmons,' which we created.

HosonoThat's great, that's great.
