From June to October, a five-part series titled "A PhotoBook Seminar | The Present and Collection of Photobooks" will be held, offering a multifaceted exploration of photobook collecting, a global phenomenon in recent years. The first session is scheduled for June 24th (Tuesday) at 7:30 PM at the Art Fair Tokyo Lounge in Negishi, Taito-ku.
Held over five sessions as a pre-event for "Art Fair Tokyo"
For photographers, the photobook is a crucial tool for sharing their work with the world, while also possessing value as a "work" in itself. With the diversification of publishing formats, including self-publishing and crowdfunding, and the increased ease of publication, a new market is expanding.
This seminar is held as a pre-event for "Art Fair Tokyo," known as Japan's largest art fair held every March. The lecturer isAtsushi Hamanaka, founder of twelvebooks, who is active internationally, managing domestic distribution for overseas publishers' photobooks, curating book selections, and planning exhibitions.The first half of the series will consist of five sessions.
Four distinguished guests, experts in the world of photobooks, will appear. In the session featuring Ryuichi Kaneko, curator at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum and a photobook collector, he will provide an overview of fundamental photobook knowledge. Irohiro Hayami, who manages international photography competitions and portfolio reviews, will discuss current trends. Tomomi Matsumoto, who handles international distribution of photobooks and selects books, will share insights from the front lines of book fairs.
The second half of the series will feature lectures with professional guests involved in photobook production, including publishers, book designers, and photographers. This will be a unique opportunity to experience the profound world of photobooks while learning about their charm and potential.
