Capturing the Encounter Between People and the Sea

Born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1967, Kazuhiko Washio began his photography career self-taught in 1997. He has published works such as the photo book "Far East Hotel" (Akashisha) and "I Won't Blame Spring" (Chuo Koron Shinsho), a co-authored work with author Natsuki Ikenami about the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Washio traveled along the coastlines of Tohoku, which were affected by the tsunami during the earthquake, documenting the traces left behind. He has also held photography exhibitions. His upcoming photo book "To The Sea," scheduled for release by Akashisha in July, is also a collection of works related to the sea.

"To The Sea" 03

As a preview of "To The Sea," a portion of the work will be shown at "Gifted Books Market," an event held on Saturday, April 12th, and Sunday, April 13th, at Book246 in Minami-Aoyama, a store specializing in travel books, which is soon to close. In addition to a slideshow screening, Washio will also give a talk.

Why do people gravitate towards the sea? Listen to Washio's behind-the-scenes stories of his continuous work capturing the moments where people and the sea confront each other, and get a glimpse into the world of "To The Sea" before its release.
