16 Days of Kyoto Immersion!
Kyoto City is undertaking various initiatives, pioneering nationwide efforts, towards the realization of "Kyoto Revitalization" – a project to pass on Kyoto's landscape, traditions, and culture to the future while promoting its appeal both domestically and internationally.
The fourth "Kyo-aruki in Tokyo 2014" is part of this Kyoto Revitalization project, with 187 companies, organizations, and universities related to Kyoto participating. Over 16 days, 110 events will be held across Tokyo, offering opportunities to experience Kyoto's charms.
On Tuesday, February 4th, an opening event will be held at Marunouchi Building. Actor Arata Iura, deeply knowledgeable about Kyoto, and Masako Gion, a jazz singer with a background as a geiko, will join Kyoto Mayor Daisaku Kadokawa to discuss Kyoto. Maiko from Kyoto will also be present to perform a dance.
Furthermore, there will be a wealth of attractions for Kyoto fans, including the Gion Bayashi music performed by the musicians of Ofunaboko, which is returning for the first time in 150 years to the Gion Festival, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event, this year; the Kyoto Ken (Kyoto Examination) celebrating its 10th anniversary; the "Kyoto Brand Forum in Tokyo"; and sales of Kyoto's specialty products.
The events held throughout Tokyo offer not only opportunities to experience tradition and deepen knowledge through recreations of Kyoto's Higashiyama Hanatouro garden illumination, exhibitions of Kyoto lacquerware screens, and furoshiki (wrapping cloth) workshops, but also a variety of engaging programs to savor Kyoto's cuisine and sake, and experience Kyoto-style hospitality. A stamp rally will also be held during the event period, allowing visitors to fully enjoy Kyoto's charms while exploring their favorite events and shops.
