35 Light Sculptures Featuring Children's Art from Tohoku Appear

Ginza's First Illumination: "Wings of Hope"

Ginza's first full-scale illumination, "Wings of Hope," will be held along Ginza and Harumi Streets from Friday, November 25th to Sunday, December 25th. This is the first Christmas since the earthquake. Adorning the streets of Ginza are 35 wing sculptures, each integrated with drawings by children from Tohoku, imbued with their wishes for "a future where everyone smiles."

The illumination was planned by the Ginza International Luxury Committee (GILC), an organization comprising the All Ginza Association, the Ginza Street Merchants Association, and 13 international luxury brands with shops in Ginza. The aim is for people passing through Ginza to share the wishes of children from the disaster-stricken areas and help them soar towards the future. Thirty-five "Wings of Hope" sculptures will appear along the 1,200-meter main streets, from Ginza 1-chome to 8-chome on Ginza Street, and from Sukiyabashi to the Ginza 4-chome intersection on Harumi Street.

Each sculpture stands 3.9 meters tall, with wing designs varying according to six keywords: "Happiness," "Love," "Bonds," "Strength," "Dreams," and "Future." At the center of each sculpture is a sphere of light, displaying drawings created by elementary school students from Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, and Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, during a workshop themed "A Future Where Everyone Smiles."

During the illumination period, donation boxes will be placed in the stores of each GILC member brand. The collected funds will be used for disaster victim support through the "Children's Support Fund for the Great East Japan Earthquake" by the Japan National Federation of UNESCO Associations.

These wing sculptures, appearing ready to take flight, embrace spheres of light filled with the wishes and hopes of children from the disaster-stricken areas for their future. This illumination, with its dazzling lights illuminating Ginza, seems poised to help us receive the children's sentiments and take a step towards a brighter future.
