The term 'creator' doesn't inherently refer to individuals in a specialized business field, but rather to a fundamental aspect of human existence. Perhaps new ways of thinking about forests will emerge from such people. On Thursday, August 19th, the second "more trees night" was held at "Restaurant-I" in Harajuku. Many attendees likely felt this sentiment after hearing guest Kenji Iino speak.

Kenji Iino's Creative Talk Time

An anecdote illustrates Iino's character. The more trees night began at 7:30 PM that day, with the talk show starting at 8:00 PM. About an hour later, fragrant dishes began to be served.

During the talk show, small portions of food were placed before Shinichi Mizutani, the director of the more trees office, Keisuke Matsushima, the owner-chef of "Restaurant-I," and Kenji Iino. All three glanced at their plates. However, the conversation had reached a crucial point, and they couldn't stop.

At that moment, Iino, holding the microphone, suddenly spoke. "Let's eat some of the food. The audience looks eager to eat, too. It feels a bit strange to make people hungry while talking about forests. And besides, it looks delicious." With those words, the atmosphere relaxed, and before the steam from the visibly delicious lasagna dissipated, the attendees were able to savor its taste.

It is said that Iino became a supporter of more trees due to his deep friendship with Ryuichi Sakamoto. In fact, Iino had a dialogue with Sakamoto when he was younger. Their long friendship began when they discovered their favorite restaurants were the same.

"Even so, it's only been in the last few years that I've started thinking about forests and the environment. I agreed to be a supporter of more trees at Sakamoto's request, but I dislike lending my name for profit without understanding something myself, so I began to study it. Times have changed rapidly."

I Was Reminded of the Relationship Between People and Trees

Recently, Iino had a striking experience related to "trees." "I'm currently involved in a certain urban planning project where we have to cut down some trees, so I went to explain to the residents. Various opinions emerged. I was surprised because it's an affluent area, and I thought they might not be interested in such matters. I was reminded of the relationship between people and trees."

Iino continuously generated conversation, shared his deep knowledge and unique perspectives on the environment, and interacted with the participants. The talk and mingling over dinner continued until well past 11 PM. Attendees that evening repeatedly expressed their satisfaction, saying, "I'm glad I came."

Following the first event with Mitsuo Miura, more trees night once again provided a space to consider forests from a different perspective. The next event is scheduled for Thursday, September 16th, just before this article's publication. It will be held at "Restaurant-I" with a capacity of 30 guests. Anyone can attend, but if applications exceed the capacity, a lottery will be held.

The guest for September is Shigeo Goto, an editor and creative director. Goto is currently working on initiatives to create a platform connecting art and the city, centered around the new facility "3331 Arts Chiyoda" in Chiyoda Ward. more trees also serves as a platform connecting forests and cities. On the day, he plans to discuss his past projects, defining organizations and places as platforms. Forests, cities, fine wine, and exquisite food promise to be the highlights of the next event.
