A New Art Form Where Nature and Civilization Intersect, Set Against a Backdrop from Antiquity to the Present

YCAM is Currently Hosting Its 10th Anniversary FestivalAs part of this celebration, a new performance titled "LIFE-WELL" has been decided, a collaboration featuring Kyogen actor Mansai Nomura, key figures in contemporary Noh theater, musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, who serves as the artistic director for the 10th-anniversary festival, and artist Shiro Takatani.

The stage for this performance is the space where "LIFE-fluid,invisible,inaudible…," an installation by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Shiro Takatani presented at YCAM in 2007, is set up.

Within a space filled with mist, visuals are projected onto nine aquarium-like screens, and as sound responds to the mist and imagery, classical Noh performances and improvisational sessions of Noh piano and visuals unfold. The ancient words and Noh theater, passed down through generations, merge with this grand installation that summarizes the 20th century and presents a vision for the 21st, giving rise to a new form of art.

As a related event, a special installation with the same theme as the performance will be exhibited within the grounds of the Nodajinja Noh Theater in Yamaguchi City, a valuable preserved example of an outdoor Noh stage.

Furthermore, from November 1 (Friday) to March 2, 2014 (Sunday), a new version of "LIFE-fluid,invisible,inaudible…" by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Shiro Takatani, along with a new installation, will be on display at YCAM.

LIFE-WELL interprets the themes of YCAM's 10th-anniversary festival – "Art," "Environment," and "Life" – from a historical perspective. Top artists, using YCAM as their stage, depict a primal yet new relationship between nature and humanity.
