A Suit Left Behind by a Lover, Treated as a "Guest"!?
Peter Brook, one of the 20th century's most influential directors, is renowned for creating imaginative theatrical spaces with minimal sets, relying on the actors' words and bodies. In Japan, his performances have been a recurring delight for theater fans since his 1973 production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and last year's "The Magic Flute" tour brought further joy.
Now, a new production is set to grace the Japanese stage. This is an adaptation of a legendary short story written in the 1950s by South African novelist Can Themba, which was banned under apartheid. This highly anticipated work, which has already been performed in 21 cities across 10 countries, will finally open in Japan.
The story unfolds in 1950s South Africa. During an affair, the lover of Philomen, a middle-class lawyer, leaves behind a suit when Philomen unexpectedly returns. The husband orders that the suit be treated as a "guest," as if to constantly admonish his wife. It is to be present at meals, taken for walks, and handled in a way that ensures the affair is never forgotten. The narrative, centered on Mathilda burdened by her "sin," unfolds with a minimal cast and sparse props.
As Peter Brook himself says, "In the theater, nothing remains as it is. Some themes are worn out, but others are reborn after a long time." "The Suit" revives themes of marriage, the relationship between men and women, and a woman's place in society, transforming them on stage to be born anew with a fresh sensibility. We eagerly anticipate experiencing Brook's creation, which maximizes the audience's imagination from "a space of nothingness," and the drama that unfolds.
