A Story Unfolding on a Unique Stage

Since its founding in 1980, Gekidan Shinkansen has garnered widespread support for its unique brand of entertainment. This year marks the culmination of a new "Metal Macbeth," an adaptation of their first Shakespearean play from 2006, which was a collaboration with Kankuro Kudo. This new version, reimagined for "IHI Stage Around Tokyo"—Asia's first theater with a 360° rotating stage—features a revised cast and storyline. Following disc1 in July and disc2 in September, disc3 is the final performance in the series.

The narrative reimagines Macbeth's tale, setting it in the war-torn year of 2218. Simultaneously, it follows the story of a band in the 1980s, also named "Metal Macbeth," amidst a booming music scene. Eventually, the two storylines converge. The play is rich with humor, incorporating names related to instruments and bands like Fender Nation, Gibson Nation, Random Star, and Mahogany. Within the unique setting of a 360° stage surrounding the audience, the four-hour performance immerses you in live rock music, dance, acrobatics, and lighthearted acting.

Metal Macbeth disc3 is being performed at IHI Stage Around Tokyo until Monday, December 31st. Special after-talk events are scheduled: on Monday, December 17th, with cast members Masami Nagasawa, Rie Mune-mura, and Kenichi Ukon; and on Wednesday, December 26th, with Kenji Urai, Dai Yanagishita, Makoto Awane, and Jun Hashimoto.
