An Expansive Program on a Grand Scale

"Roppongi Art Night" is a highly anticipated art event set against the backdrop of the Roppongi district.
Artworks, along with design, music, film, and performance pieces, are scattered throughout Roppongi's commercial and cultural facilities, creating an extraordinary experience. By integrating art and the city, the event aims to establish a new cultural model within the vast metropolis of Tokyo.

Now in its fourth year, "Roppongi Art Night" is one of Tokyo's premier art festivals.

A highlight of this year's event is the "TRIP→ Project," featuring a "Lighthouse" monument by Artistic Director Katsuhiko Hibino at Roppongi Hills Arena.

Hibino himself harvested salt-damaged cedar trees from Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, which were affected by the tsunami from the Great East Japan Earthquake. The lighthouse will be illuminated by charcoal made from these cedars.

The "Art Boat Project," featuring ten unique "art boats" each approximately 7 meters long created by emerging artists, is another main project of "Roppongi Art Night 2013," with these boats displayed throughout the area.

Performances will unfold at various times and locations in collaboration with the "art boats," including a departure ceremony performance by "off-Nibroll," known for its diverse expressions centered on dance, and the media art and music artist "Open Reel Ensemble".

Also featured are boats that will serve as the stage for a spectacular world created by contemporary artist Muneteru Ujino and the large jazz ensemble "Shibusa Shirazu Orchestra," as well as a boat that Filipino artist Mark Salvatus will create with visitors over the course of one night. These and many other "art boats" will fill Roppongi.

Art Intervenes in Roppongi's "Everyday"

This year also includes numerous programs that engage with Roppongi's living spaces, such as "Art Port Roppongi," where art extends to local dry cleaners and shrines; "Performance in the Park," featuring performances by three talented dance groups in Roppongi's parks; and a project collaborating with the "Suisan Keizai Shimbun" (Fisheries Economic Newspaper), which has a 65-year history and is based in Roppongi.

On the day of the event, special programs including installations and talk events will be held at several museums in Roppongi. Additionally, some of the current exhibitions at these museums will be free or discounted, making the entire museum experience very accessible. This is also something to take advantage of.

The peak of the excitement occurs during the "Core Time," from sunset to sunrise, when the main events are concentrated. We highly recommend experiencing this trip into the extraordinary set in Roppongi.
