‘Radio Iwai’: Revealing Every Facet of the Work
‘Side C’ is conceived as a space to enjoy conversation, positioned neither as the “A-side” nor the “B-side” of a person’s life. For this iteration, Hideki Iwai and Takahiro Fujita, both acclaimed directors and playwrights, will engage in relaxed yet groovy discussions in an atmosphere befitting the late hour.
Hideki Iwai, the driving force behind the theater company Hai-Bye, is known for his portrayals of family, social withdrawal, and the dynamics between groups and individuals. This year, he also received the 30th Kikuchi Kan Prize for his first television drama, ‘To Give Birth and to Be Born: What Comes After.’ His event, ‘Radio Iwai,’ will offer insights into his work.
The first night, December 22nd (Sat), titled “Hideki Iwai Discusses His Own Works,” will feature a full screening of a Hai-Bye production, followed by Iwai’s in-depth commentary. This rare event promises to reveal how Hai-Bye’s plays—which transform the incomprehensible and the frightening into humor—are conceived and brought to life. Iwai will share specific anecdotes from rehearsals, sudden bursts of inspiration, and interactions with his team, offering a complete look at the creation process.
The second night, “Hideki Iwai Discusses Himself,” will delve into the lesser-known aspects of Iwai, who draws heavily from his own experiences—including being a former shut-in with a passion for games and pro wrestling—and reflects them in his work. As his profile as an actor also grows, this promises to be an unmissable session for fans eager to learn more about his influences and personal journey.
Takahiro Fujita, who recently won the Kishida Kunio Playwright Award at the young age of 26 and is poised for a bright future, will host ‘Radio Fujita.’ This segment will look back at 2012, accompanied by the music used in his works from the past year, and will also include readings of Fujita’s poetry.
These conversations, unfolding in the intimate atmosphere of the night, are presented by two emerging talents whose future endeavors are highly anticipated. Much like listening to the radio at home, one can relax, share a chuckle, and immerse themselves in this unique nocturnal experience.
