Mix for OPENERS Vol.53 | iTunes | Shuya Okino | selected by SHUYA OKINO

The 53rd installment of our cutting-edge compilation series.

This is the 53rd monthly compilation from Shuya Okino of KYOTO JAZZ MASSIVE, a DJ, the world's only selector critic, and a leading figure in sound branding that transforms space value through music.

This installment is entirely new material. We've carefully selected avant-garde tracks from the crossover music scene, which has seen a surge of great releases leading up to the end of the year. The theme is 'EDGE OF AN AGE'.

The first half features male vocals, starting with a remix by Mark de Clive-Lowe, who has been energetically active in both production and live performances. It includes the new single from the notable label Local Talk by Dirtytwo, whose keyboard and machine drum combination evokes early house music; the dark and eccentric dub track from Soul Renegades, whose name we haven't heard in a while but remains as distinctive as ever; and a new track from Joey Negro, who consistently injects excitement into the scene.

The latter half transitions to female vocal tracks, featuring Makoto's cosmic breakbeats – a creator of world-class caliber from Japan – and two remixes related to Daz-I-Kue, a member of Bugz In The Attic, who is based in Atlanta. It also features Kaidi Thatam's new project from B.I.T.A., moving through a fusion-infused slow broken beat, and finally arriving at downtempo soul from Positive Flow's long-awaited new album, which is generating significant buzz for its release at the end of this month.

While crossover music, with its eclectic nature, can sometimes be shunned by purists, the emergence of such a rich body of work heightens expectations for its resurgence. To use a common phrase, its free sensibility, which embraces fusion with all kinds of music under the keyword of jazz influence, is eternally immortal.
