Mix for OPENERS Vol.52 | iTunes | Shuya Okino | selected by SHUYA OKINO

The 52nd installment of our cutting-edge compilation series

SOUND SANCTUARY: 'Legal Download DJ Set' (Part 1)

From Shuya Okino, a DJ, the world's only selector critic, and a leading figure in sound branding that transforms space value through music, of KYOTO JAZZ MASSIVE.Shuya OkinoThis is the 52nd installment of his monthly compilation series.

This month, we present a playlist selected for OPENERS, spanning two hours from 10 PM to midnight, for the event KYOTO JAZZ MASSIVE Presents SOUND SANCTUARY 'Shuya Okino Monthly Compilation "Mix for OPENERS" 50th Anniversary Special x The Room 20th Anniversary Party Vol. 10' held at The Room, formerly Shibuya's club Tamari-ba.

This two-hour set was an experimental endeavor where every track was available for immediate purchase on the iTunes Music Store. The DJ set, using only commercially available music, was streamed live on Twitter and Facebook, with links to the albums published track by track, allowing for instant song identification and download.

The first half begins with downtempo jazz, moving through Detroit techno, instrumental hip-hop from Russia, and nu-disco/boogie, before arriving at jazz-infused deep house. Notably, Andrew Ashong's 'Flowers,' produced by Theo Parrish, is a track generating buzz among jazz and soul fans, making it a highlight. I personally wanted to strongly push the work of Lay-Far, an emerging producer based in Moscow, so I played two of his tracks consecutively. Additionally, the remix of Albert Ayler by Masa Sextet, featuring Bembe Segue who recently visited Japan for the Tokyo Crossover/Jazz Festival, was an essential inclusion at this time due to its potential for global hit status.

The 52nd installment of our cutting-edge compilation series

SOUND SANCTUARY: 'Legal Download DJ Set' (Part 2)

The latter half unfolds from spiritual jazz, soul, disco, house, dubstep, and then to Flying Lotus featuring Erykah Badu! It finally shifts to Brazilian music, concluding with a powerful sequence of Airto Moreira & Flora Purim, interspersed with IG Culture's take on the classic 'FICA MAL COM DEUS.' While the segment from ART ENSAMBLE OF CHICAGO's cover to DJ KAWASAKI moved briskly across genres, the BPM began to accelerate around Joey Negro, reaching a peak with 'See Thru To You,' only to reach an even greater highlight with 'Tombo.' I wonder if my ambitious adventure was successful?

By covering everything from the latest music to The Room's current staples and past hits, I believe we've managed to blend the up-to-the-minute information provided to our readers in this monthly compilation with the significance of our 20th anniversary. In my own style, and in the style of Mix for Openers... We plan to revisit this concept, where song titles and artist names are instantly uploaded to the internet during DJ sets and can be purchased immediately, with further enhancements in the future. I secretly hope that this playlist will serve as proof of a groundbreaking experiment in music sales, not just as a tie-in for the series and the club's anniversary.
