Nobuyoshi Araki's solo exhibition, "Sentimental Sky," will be held at RAT HOLE GALLERY in Minami-Aoyama from Friday, August 24th to Sunday, October 7th.

A Photobook to Accompany the Exhibition
Since the passing of his beloved wife, Yoko, in 1990, Araki has made photographing the sky a daily ritual. For him, whose photographs are deeply personal narratives, the sky is a mirror reflecting his own heart, and his sky photographs are uniquely his own.
In the video work "Sanzekuu," 3,000 sky photographs taken from his home balcony are montaged and projected onto a large screen for four hours. From cloudless blue skies to intertwined contrails and twilight hues, the sky's myriad expressions envelop the viewer. Utility poles, power lines, rooftops, and trees are also integral parts of the composition, inseparable from Araki's "sky."
The exhibition will also feature 20 photographs from "Balcony of Love," which documents his home balcony where he shared countless moments of love with Yoko and his cat, Chiro, from 1983 to 2011, alongside three silk screen prints depicting Yoko. A photobook, "Sentimental Sky," will also be published in conjunction with the exhibition.
Araki moved from his home, a place of special significance with its balcony that has appeared in numerous works, last year. Following "Sentimental Journey: Winter Journey" (1991), which documented his final days with Yoko, and "Sentimental Journey: Spring Journey" (2010), chronicling his farewell to Chiro, "Sentimental Sky" marks another chapter in a love story.
