Visiting a Tanzanian Primary School Facing Food Shortages
Children attend school hungry, unable to eat even a single meal a day. Globally, 66 million children face this reality, and an additional 72 million are unable to attend school at all. For over 45 years, the WFP has supported school feeding programs to promote the healthy growth of children in developing countries and expand their educational opportunities.
This school feeding program, which delivers a nutritious meal for approximately 30 yen per child per day, is funded by donations from individuals and contributions from corporations and organizations. The WFP currently provides meals to over 20 million children in approximately 60 countries worldwide.
The meals, served in the program's iconic "red cups," not only satisfy hunger but also play a crucial role in improving school attendance. Why? When free school meals are provided, parents are more motivated to send their children to school. With hunger alleviated, children can concentrate better on their studies. The school feeding program is a "key" to nurturing literate, independent adults and breaking the cycle of hunger and poverty.
With the cooperation of the Advertising Council of Japan (AC Japan), model and WFP Official Supporter Kurara Chibana visited a primary school in Tanzania, one of the sites facing a food crisis, to witness the children's situation firsthand and film a new advertisement highlighting the importance of school meals.
At the press conference for the new advertisement, Chibana shared, "The principal mentioned that attendance rates have improved and academic performance has increased since the feeding program began." She added, "The children were engrossed in their meals. Seeing how school lunches act as a catalyst for education and spread has made me very happy," conveying that school meals are leading to brighter futures for children.
The new advertisement, with the slogan "A Child's Future Blossoms from a Red Cup of School Lunch," features Chibana appealing, "WFP lunches are packed with nutrition. Nourishment to learn. Please support the WFP's School Feeding Program," emphasizing the necessity of support for children.
This new advertisement is part of AC Japan's annual support campaign. It will be featured on television, radio, and in newspapers until June 30th of next year, calling for cooperation with the school feeding program.
