Japan's Daily Necessities: A Diverse Tapestry
True to its name, "365 Charming Everyday Things" (San-roku-go) presents and sells 365 carefully selected, charming Japanese items, curated one for each day of the year, following a daily calendar format.
At the Ginza POLA Museum Annex, the exhibition utilizes the same elements as the Paris display, with each item presented on a distinct white circular plate, stamped with its corresponding date. The spatial design for this venue was also conceived by Tsuyoshi Tane, an architect based in Paris (DORELL.GHOTMEH.TANE/ARCHITECTES).
Among the neatly arranged items, some are familiar, perhaps used for a long time, while others might have been glimpsed in shops. Many evoke a sense of fragmented recognition. The sheer volume of items gathered in one place creates a powerful visual impact.
A Large Wall Displays a Daily Calendar
The traditional Japanese daily calendar, beautifully bound with Japanese stitching, features a design by art director Kazunari Hattori. It serves not only as a calendar for 2012 but also as a delightful catalog of the 365 featured items.
We want more people, both in Japan and abroad, to appreciate the quality and diversity of Japanese daily goods, and to feel the warmth of the creators' hands.—This is the sentiment behind the "365 Charming Everyday Things" project.
From tools and toys crafted with time-honored techniques, like brooms and papier-mâché dolls, to the latest design products, intricate mechanical devices utilizing cutting-edge technology, and minimalist, refined items stripped of ornamentation, as well as those embodying the essence of "KAWAII"—a term now universally understood—each piece showcases Japanese ingenuity, craftsmanship, and aesthetic sensibility. They are all practical and bring a sense of joy. It is highly recommended to experience their charm firsthand.
