Roppongi Transformed by Art in the Middle of the Night

Launched in 2009, Roppongi Art Night saw approximately 700,000 visitors in 2010 and is now in its third year. This year, under the theme "Let's Create Japan's Vitality Through Art," various domestic and international artists will present works with strong messages and uplifting power, conveying the energy of art to the audience.

The core hours are from sunset at 5:56 PM to sunrise at 5:38 AM, with a variety of events unfolding at Roppongi Hills, Tokyo Midtown, and other venues. Participating museums will also extend their opening hours, creating an "artistic night" that lasts all night. The program includes the unveiling of Yayoi Kusama's new works, "YAYOI-CHAN" and "RIN-RIN," each measuring 10 meters in length, as well as a "Polka Dot Cafe" adorned with her signature dots. Her various artworks will be exhibited throughout Roppongi, painting the town in "Kusama colors."

Antenna, an artist group based in Kyoto, will present a large-scale installation project, "Roppongi Densho 2012," at Tokyo Midtown. Using their unique character "Jappy" as a motif, they will express Japanese festivals and culture. Roppongi Hills will also feature various installations utilizing video and other media. The event promises to depict an extraordinary "spring night's dream."

This year also features the program "Roppongi Agora," conceived in response to the profound changes Japan has undergone since the earthquake. It includes "Tohoku Koyomi no Yobune" by Katsuhiko Hibino, which connects Ishinomaki, Roppongi, and Kamaishi, weaving together people's thoughts and setting them adrift on lights; and "IVOUAC FOR TOHOKU," where students from Tohoku University of Art and Design, who have continuously worked with disaster-affected areas on a "working together" basis, will conduct similar activities in Roppongi.

OPENERS is offering a "Roppongi Art Night 2012 Special Ticket" valid for exhibitions at the Mori Art Museum, Suntory Museum of Art, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, and The National Art Center, Tokyo. To ensure visitors can fully enjoy this all-night art celebration—which includes extended hours for museums and cultural facilities, outdoor installations, and exhibitions—restaurants will extend their late-night operating hours, and free shuttle buses will be available, as they were last year.

A dreamlike night where Roppongi is adorned with art. In these times of hardship and sorrow following the earthquake and nuclear accident, we want to believe in the power of art.
