The First Citizens' Marathon Since the Earthquake: "Road to Recovery Rikuzentakata Support Marathon"

On Sunday, November 15th, in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, which suffered severe damage from the Great East Japan Earthquake, the "Road to Recovery Rikuzentakata Support Marathon," the first citizens' marathon since the earthquake, was held, welcoming runners from across the country. adidas Japan, which has supported the disaster-stricken region, is supporting the event's operations and accepting entries for the 5km and 10km races from outside the city until Thursday, October 15th.

Sharing a "Loop of Support" Among All Participants

Rikuzentakata City, known for its "Miracle Pine Tree," was one of the areas devastated by the tsunami from the earthquake. adidas Japan has been involved in various reconstruction support efforts through sports, not only through fundraising but also by donating sports equipment and organizing sports events.

The "Road to Recovery Rikuzentakata Support Marathon" was planned to allow participants to break a sweat and improve their fitness, while also ensuring that the memories of the earthquake, now four and a half years past, do not fade, and to strengthen support for reconstruction. adidas is supporting the event's operations.

The competition includes four categories for local residents, ranging from 1.5km to 3km, as well as 5km and 10km courses open to runners from outside the city. Furthermore, the back number cards distributed to participants have a space for runners to freely write their messages of support for Rikuzentakata City, creating a "loop of support" that is shared among all participants, including those cheering from the sidelines.

With the "Miracle Pine Tree" serving as the start and finish line, this event, which is set to continue in the future, seems poised to be an occasion for people to look at the present state of Rikuzentakata and, together with its residents, to renew their wishes for its reconstruction.
