Japan is home to many wonderful things. By gathering items we want to use every day, we can glimpse a vibrant way of life. With this perspective, '365 Charming Everyday Things' has finally launched. Nao Takegata of Attaché Press, involved in its operation, sends a special report to OPENERS from Paris, the location of the project's first installment!

'365 Charming Everyday Things,' preparations for which began at the end of last summer, has opened its exhibition and limited shop in Paris on January 20th!

'365 Charming Everyday Things' aims to share the excellence and diversity of Japanese daily necessities with people both in Japan and abroad, and to intimately convey the warmth of the artisans' hands.Born from such simple yet earnest desires, the project has gathered items that resonate with Japanese daily life, embodying Japanese wisdom, craftsmanship, and aesthetic sensibility, all while being practical and delightful.

True to its name, '365' (San-Roku-Go), the project disseminates 365 carefully selected Japanese items, one for each day of the year according to a tear-off calendar, to the world.

The Paris venue is the gallery 'Bastille Design Center,' located a five-minute walk from the lifestyle shop Merci. Housed in a former hardware factory built in the 19th century, the space retains its original wooden floors and offers a bright, airy, and pleasant atmosphere. The exhibition design was conceived by Tsuyoshi Tane (DORELL.GHOTMEH.TANE / ARCHITECTS), an architect based in Paris.

The first floor of the gallery is an exhibition space where visitors can examine the 365 items closely. Each day's selected item is presented on an individual white plate, creating a visual narrative of the 365 days. It evokes the vibrant imagery of a market brimming with colorful goods or a cafe adorned with artfully arranged plates.

After Paris, it returns to Japan for exhibitions in Aomori and Tokyo!

The second floor is the shop space. Visitors who have carefully examined the products and their corresponding dates on the first floor can then pick them up and inspect them with genuine interest, a scene that leaves a strong impression. The vast array of items, spanning numerous categories, are displayed on shelves artfully arranged along the perimeter of the mezzanine railing.

Curator Yu Yamada (method) has meticulously curated the collection, including stationery, kitchenware, items for home relaxation, and children's goods. Parisians show particular interest in functional items like stationery, brooms, and kitchenware, as well as traditional Japanese items such as zori sandals and papier-mâché toys, and their modernized versions.

The basement level is a space dedicated to receiving detailed information about each item. For every product, handwritten notes highlighting its charming points, penned by the brand, designer, or manufacturer, are displayed alongside product photos and videos. The unique character of the handwritten text, reflecting the maker's individuality, powerfully conveys their passion for each item to the Parisian audience.

Here, the tear-off calendar, designed by art director Kazunari Hattori, is also exhibited page by page. Visitors can delve into the details of items from dates that caught their eye.

Six days pass in a flash, and the first installment in Paris concludes. Following this, the project returns to Japan for immediate exhibitions in Aomori and Tokyo!
These are items we wholeheartedly want everyone in Japan to see, touch, and use. Please visit the 'San-Roku-Go Daily Necessities Store' if it comes to a location near you!
