Saruyama: Shiro Hamanaka Exhibition “alternative white” Now Open

This time, the theme returns to white porcelain.

Shiro Hamanaka Exhibition: "alternative white" Now Open

The "alternative white" Shiro Hamanaka exhibition, running from Saturday, December 10th to Sunday, December 18th, features white porcelain using glazes not seen in previous years. I am eagerly anticipating it.

Focus on pieces using a new glaze, described as a "first attempt."

This is Shiro Hamanaka's fifth solo exhibition at Saruyama. Over this time, we have collaborated on various projects, and his work with the Oya Kiln in Hagi, Yamaguchi, in collaboration with Guillemets Layout Studio, now exceeds 60 pieces. New items are scheduled to be added early next year.

The title of the first exhibition was "Unyu Hakuji" (Un-glazed White Porcelain). Vessels fired without glaze are like nudes, with the potter's touch recorded within the clay, its traces clearly visible on the surface. This unvarnished presentation is only achievable through rigorous process. The finished forms are breathtakingly beautiful. A multitude of elements that evoke such admiration, each enhancing the others while creating a serene individual presence, filled the venue with captivating forms.

I have since immersed myself in the changing aesthetics of each exhibition, enjoying the vessels, and this time the theme has returned to white porcelain. While there will be some un-glazed pieces, the focus will be on those using a new glaze, which he describes as a first attempt. I can hardly wait.
